I am 32 years old. I have been teaching for 9 years. This is my second year teaching at Sonoran Science Academy Tucson campus.I earned my bachelors and masters in Chemistry. I mentored First Lego League team last year and I mentored First Tech Challenge team this year. We build a robot that can pick and drop pvc pipes. It was amazing. This year I taught 8th grade physical science, geometry and computer science. Our school has a policy for science fair projects. Each student has to do an individual project. I hope I can learn more about Astronomy by means of this course and help my students better.
I am a total part timer in three different areas... I am a part time high school teacher (physics and environmental science), adjunct faculty at Central Arizona College, and professional development trainer for St. Anthony's elementary school (inquiry based science). I help my kids school with their science fair and look forward to learning more about how Astronomy can be included in greater depth as inquiry science and science fair projects. Thanks for the opportunity!
Hi - I'm Marea Jenness. I teach Integrated Science at Tucson High Magnet School. This is my 8th year at Tucson High. I used to teach an Engineering elective, but it has fallen victim to budget cuts. I am excited to find out more about astronomy and some inquiry-based lessons to share with my students.
Hi, I'm Katy Garmany. I’m the PI for the grant that supports this program, and Chris and I have been working together for several years. My background: I spent years as a research astronomer studying very massive stars and how they form and evolve, then I morphed into astronomy education, first as a planetarium director in Boulder CO, then I moved to Tucson about 10 years ago. I ran an undergrad astronomy program at the Biosphere for a few years, then moved to NOAO, National Optical Astronomy Observatory (that’s the organization that runs Kitt Peak, not to be confused with NOAA!). I'm really interested in finding ways to help science teachers: astronomy seems (to me, anyway) a natural hook, and it also is an easy path to including math in the science class. While we have specific tech tools we want to introduce to you, I hope you will feel free to raise other astronomy questions, and I'll do my best to answer them so we can explore together. Chris handles this blog, but I’m reading it, and I’ll answer questions as well. So feel free to ask questions of both of us!
I should also note that this is a special AstroBITS class: the last one. Our funding from Science Foundation Arizona ends June 30. While that is the end of financial support, I hope we can continue to support you in other ways, tbd!
I’ve worked with Katy Garmany on the astrobits teacher workshops for the last four years. Welcome everyone who has made it to the blog. I look after the blog. If you have any tech problems; using excel, making a screen print, downloading images, email of phone me. If you spot an error in the course material, contact me. During the course, you will be asked for screen shots. Email them to me. Some information about me. I was born in New Zealand, grew up in England, taught in Antigua and have lived in Tucson for the last 12 years. I teach Chemistry, Physics and Integrated Science at Howenstine High School in TUSD.
Six years ago I was asked to teach Earth Science. Back then you didn’t need to be highly qualified. The textbook was dry and I needed to find out more. I took 2 courses in Geographical Information Systems one summer with an emphasis on student research. The following summer, I took an astronomy course with Katy. I took a version of the online course that you are going to take. In the 0.9m telescope on Kitt peak, I asked Katy about this mysterious HR diagram and from that developed an online project; open clusters, my students’ science fair project, a NASA grant to find red shifted galaxies on the edge of our universe and much more.
Hello, I am Sandra Engelman. I’m teaching at Alchesay High School and I teach Environmental Science. I started teaching in 1989 and I’m looking forward to gaining more knowledge on teaching science through this online course. Thank you.

Hello all, I'm Laura. I have been teaching at Pueblo High School for something like 22 years! I started out teaching Earth Science for 15 years then switched over to teaching Chemistry these last years. Right now, I am scheduled to teach one class of Astronomy/ Planetary Science next year. I wanted to use this class to brush up on current research practices in Astronomy that would benefit my students.
Hi, I'm Cassi. I just finished my 6th year of teaching at Marana High School. I teach Chemistry and Conceptual Physics. Students have been asking for an astronomy course. We are putting together a course description/scope/sequence to get an astronomy course approved for next year. I am finishing up a MA in teaching science through the UofA MASTER-IP program. I am interning at Raytheon Missile Co. this summer. I am very glad to get this extra info/practice with astronomy.
Hi, I am Fatima Lopez. I teacher 4 sections of Earth and Space Science junior level and 1 section of integrated science freshman level at Pueblo Magnet High School. Sorry, I just posted my introduction. Last week of school was hectic this year. I have been teaching science and math for 14 years.
